Supercomposed is a celebration of "scope", a widescreen motion picture format allowing for images with a ratio of between 2.35 and 2.66 to 1. It was first developed in the USA by Spyros P. Skouras under the brand name CinemaScope, but was rapidly copied around the world and remains one of the most popular screen ratios for motion pictures today.
While directors select numerous screen ratios when making their films - and all of them are artistically valid and generally appropriate to the films in question - I have always most liked the extreme width of the scope format. This blog is not intended to feature the most famous shots from motion pictures, but rather example shots that use the scope format to present visually attractive images.
